I was doomed to grading papers and making tests over the weekend, and in so
doing burned through backlogs of two series on my DVR. A few quick notes.

Turn did get a little better after its horrible first episode, but only a
little. If anyone here has read the book I would like to know if it was any
better, or if I should blame the source material. If this were on ABC I
would assume the network suits and kibitzed it to death, not trusting the
great story it had on its hands, and weighing it down with ridiculous and
unnecessary romantic and family conflict. But this is AMC, which has a
track record of letting its creative people have their heads. But they also
like to do things on the cheap, and perhaps I am underestimating the costs
involved in producing a period piece. In any case this is by far the worst
drama AMC has tried. But yes, I am such a sucker for this kind of thing, I
will record it again next season - if there is a next season (from what I
have gathered, that is still to be determined).

Silicon Valley on the other hand was a real delight. I had not read
anything about this in advance, and so was able to set my own expectations,
which were relatively low (low enough that I took my time in getting around
to it). A bit slow in getting going, once it did it went from amusing to
funny to hilarious at a pretty good pace. It may just have been the mood I
was in, but I don't think I have laughed out loud so long and hard at a tv
show as I did during the finale of season 1 in a very long time.

Bonus Note: I don't know what the fuck Louis C.K. is doing now on FX, but
whatever the hell it is, it is brilliant. It has morphed from a kind of
working class Seinfeld into some kind of surrealistic existential hall of
mirrors, which is as likely to be excruciatingly painful as it is amusing
to watch. I am all in.
