I haven't watched Silicon Valley yet, but have watched the first
8 of Turn. Revolutionary and Civil Wars are my main area
of interest in history reading. My American Wars book club
read the source book "Washington's Spies" when it first came
out in paperback and the group voted to read it again for
next week's meeting. I'm not rereading the book but that's
why I'm pushing to finish the series since I'm sure that will
be discussed also. The book was good and was a good update
on the previous popular history treatment of Revolutionary
War spies that had been done in the 1960s.
I think the problems with the series have to do with the writing
of the series and didn't come from the source book.
I can understand the writers wanting to show how the
Culper spy operation started but the most significant events that
the group was involved in were later in the war most notably
Benedict Arnold's treason plot and providing information
regarding planning for Yorktown campaign. The producers also
must not want to sell this series to Canadian TV because
they are portraying John Graves Simcoe as a psycho murderer and
would be rapist. He went to Canada after the war and is considered
the founder of Ontario and Toronto.
As a viewer I'm having trouble with everything being too dark
to see clearly (yes I understand they didn't have electric lights
in 1776 but other historically set movies and TV shows manage
to make the lighting workable for clear viewing). Also the accents
are all over the place from modern American to Canadian to
standard British TV to Irish to Scottish so it's hard to understand
all the dialogue even with captioning on.
