Yeah, "Riot" was simply trying way too hard.  And all those "edgy"
statements Rove McManus (who didn't host the Australian version of this
show) was forced to read off the prompter coming out of breaks were
ridiculous--but Jane Lynch is forced to do the same thing on "Hollywood
Game Night" when she can come up with better lines herself.  (And don't get
me started on Paul Telgedy's seeming edict on NBC reality shows that there
have to be clips out-of-context at the top of the show and before every
break--and that the paid extras that make up the audience are overwhelmed
by the sweetening, which still sounds like it's coming from the next room.
 As obnoxious as "Mother MacKenzie" was on NBC daytime game shows--and
variety shows--back in the day, at least it sounded like it could plausibly
come from the same room.)
