Well I'm happy, because my collection isn't totally obsolete. Of course a 
few years back they used to have INFAX, the internal BBC database, 
available to browse which did actually include what went out and in many 
cases full descriptions of the contents of the programmes, but then it was 
made unavailable, I think because it included too much information for the 
public. Fantastic we have what we've got, though. The idea is that this in 
time will be a complete record of everything ever broadcast and it will 
link through to the actual programme if they ever manage to work out a way 
to make their entire archive available.

There is a similar database using the TV Times for ITV and Channel 4 
listings but it's only available for academic use.
