It took me a while to find something new on TV worth praising, but in fairness the something in question is three years old, so I think my reputation as a crotchety nay-sayer is still safe. "Page Eight" is the first in what PBS is dubbing "The Worricker Trilogy," and it is what I like to see in a TV production. Smart writing, smart acting, and smart directing make this worthy of your time. It's a spy thriller with a subtle sense of humor... not a slam-bang James Bond sort of spy thriller. In terms of plot, think more along the lines of John le Carré (only not the boring-as-sin remake), and think more along the lines of the "House of Cards" triology in terms of production (only not the American remake). The cast is full of recognizable faces if not names... Michael Gambon (yes, Top gear fans, the guy for whom Gambon Corner is named) and Rachel Weisz both give understated yet memorable performances, and Bill Nighy is a compelling lead. This is not something to have on in the background while chatting on Facebook or washing the dishes. This is something you'll want to sit down and focus on. It is expert storytelling with a far from predictable yet totally satisfying ending. I'm hoping the other two installments in the series are as captivating. If they are, I'm hoping it's more than a trilogy.
