I'm not sure if that was only in New York or across the country. He made a couple of cameo appearances on the Late Show but he was so visibly nervous on camera that the bits didn't work. When Johnny Carson announced that he was leaving the Tonight Show in 1979 he got full ownership of his show in the ensuing negotiations. When CBS wooed Letterman in 1992 they offered him ownership of the Late Show and whatever he wanted to put in the 12:30 slot. Jay and Conan had production companies and some participation in their shows, but they were owned by NBC. Same with Kimmel and ABC. Over the years CBS took over larger shares of the Late Late Show and in the last contraction negotiation for Craig CBS took full ownership. And they have announced that they will own Colbert's show. I haven't heard anything about Peter Lassally's future. His participation in the new show(s) is going to be at the discretion of CBS and considering his age I don't expect him to be asked to stay on. I thought Michael Naidus and the Late Late Show staff would continue past Dec 19 with the guest hosts in the new year. But Craig said in an aside on his show that Michael was going with Craig when he leaves so Bernstein might have to start his tenure by putting together a staff for the guest host period of the Late Late Show. -- -- TV or Not TV ....
