I really enjoyed reading this interview. Some clarification, though: the
article claims "about 1.4 million have joined the PTC
<http://w2.parentstv.org/Main/> in some fashion, with about 100,000
actively donating per year." In the 1970s advocacy organizations made the
strategic decision that their goals would best be served through litigation
and lobbying and they made their organizational goal to raise money from
the grass roots. So they offered membership to the organization available
through yearly dues and when going to public officials claimed that they
represented their membership, even if the only action the member took was
to write a check. In the late 1990s MoveOn turned the membership model
upside-down by emailing online petitions and counting anybody who responded
as a MoveOn member. Later the MoveOn member would be hit up for funds on
the basis of that person's specific interest as determined by which
petitions s/he responded to. So MoveOn could go to public officials and
claim they represented 10 times as many members as other progressive
organizations based on the differing definitions of membership.

So PTC has 100K dues paying members and 1.4M people who clicked on an
online petition. The reader is left to determine PTC's real numerical
strength.

I dislike and avoid explicit violence on TV and I am uncomfortable with
explicit sexuality on network shows. By that standard I sympathize with
PTC's mission but the interview shows how PTC is losing influence in the
short term and will end up trying to stop the tide in the long term. Plus
they haven't been able to separate themselves from Brent Bozell and that
legacy.
