It's the end of another year. As I stated on my birthday, change is afoot.
New digs, new wheels, and new happy pills. I'm no longer in my 30s, no
longer working retail, and my hair's not getting any longer in the front. I
know Ferris Bueller used to say that life moves pretty fast and we needed
to stop and look around or we'd miss it. I disagree and believe if we try
to miss life, life will walk right up and slap us across the face.

I doubt anyone in 2013 could have predicted Cosby rape allegations, a
cartoon starring Mike Tyson, the most popular videogame being about a
Kardashian, or Mork from Ork offing himself. Don Pardo will never again
introduce Saturday Night Live, Sid Caesar will never again improvise a
foreign language, and Casey Kasem will never again record a dead-dog
dedication.

What will 2015 bring? I wouldn't dare to speculate. Several of my friends
are engaged to be married in the coming year; others are expecting babies.
One of my nieces and one of my nephews are in college. David Letterman will
retire from late night television.

I made a resolution mid-year to stop watching partisan comedy shows like
The Daily Show, and though I miss the laughs, I don't miss the divisiveness
and feel I'm better emotionally because of it. I'll continue that
resolution in 2015 and add one other element to the mix, specifically I
plan to cease listening to "the blues," or really any and all depressing
music. Again, I'm a fan, but it isn't helping my general mood on any given
day, so I'm going to give it a try and see what happens. As far as more
substantive resolutions, my life is such a roller coaster I don't dare to
contemplate all the aspects I need to address. Owning an older vehicle,
learning basic auto repair would probably be a good thing to learn, but for
now I'd be content to be able to paint it the way I want.

To everyone out there, I genuinely hope the coming year brings you new
sources of joy, love, and peace. Just because I can be down on life doesn't
mean you should stop reaching for the proverbial brass ring. I want the
best for all my friends and family. Don't compromise who you are and don't
setle for less than you deserve. Do daring things, "live deliberately," and
don't drink cheap beer.

That's all from 2014 at this time. Sleep tight North America. Stay tuned
for Berkowitz.
