Here, in a simple stat, is how ESPN has changed (I'd argue for the worst), in the past 19-plus years.
I have the SportsCenter Big Show from the day Jim Valvano died of cancer. >From the opening of the segment to the fade to black at the end of the act was 7:29. Here was a man who was not just a key member of ESPN, but had a decent history as a basketball coach (won a national championship at NC State). ESPN has released their tribute to Stewart Scott: a man who did nothing but narrate sport highlights and host gameday programming. He once, on a New Year's Eve broadcast, begged viewers to not boo pro athletes: as much sucking up to the athletes he covered as anything. He, effectively, is ephemera in sports broadcasting. That tribute lasted 15 minutes. I look forward to the four-minute SC segment if Vin Scully dies. -- -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
