I think the transition will be more like when Late Night went from Dave to
Conan: if the new host tries to do the same show with the same sensibility,
he or she will fail as a weak retread of Stewart. Hiring from within would
depend on whether the writing staff wants to stay with the show or follow
Stewart out the door.

As for Oliver, he would probably be the most natural successor but he would
have to give up a weekly show where he seems to have found his sweet spot
for a daily show. As for Meyers, he's probably being paid more at NBC -
basic cable has never paid that well. I don't think he has found his voice
yet as a talk show host but he's doing well enough (or the stakes are low
enough) that Lorne and NBC will be content to let him continue to work it
out. If he were to leave for Comedy Central he would lose Lorne's
protection and find himself having to fill Jon Stewart's shoes.
