I loathed "Wayne's World" (featuring two of my least-favorite-ever SNLers) then and hated it now. It struck me as more an opportunity to show Lorne's "sense of humor about himself" than anything else -- well, that and the chance to almost literally say how awesome SNL is.
As for Pardo, there was no reason they couldn't have dropped in a "It's Saturday Night Live!" from him at the beginning. Having sound clips of him doing the guests' names wouldn't have hurt, either, but then there are problems like Win Butler (whoever that is), so Hammond would have had to take over at some point.
