I think you're way overthinking it. My impression from hearing Corden is that he wants to do a "throw anything at the wall" show, and this falls right in line with that. That he doesn't have the chops to pull it off is something else.
The main thing about Corden is that, since Les picked him personally (for no apparent reason), he has the same job security as Julie Chen.
