There's also a passage about NBC's belated offer of "Tonight" to Letterman (circa December 1992). I can't find my copy of the book now, but as I recall, a reporter asked a CBS official (possibly Stringer) what they would do if NBC dropped Leno, and the CBS official said something along the lines of "If they drop Leno, we'll take him.
