Is it possible that for the time period, "That Girl" was just much less sexist
than most other programs?  The first series of Star Trek treated women better
than most programs on in the late sixties, but there's a lot that doesn't look
good now.

I had some college kids (mostly female) over to my house just before the end of
our term (mid June) and left them to watch TV in my living room while I did
some work in my study. I was surprised when I came back to check on them to
find them immersed in a *That Girl* marathon they found somewhere on the cable
dial (I guess "dial" is no longer a meaningful image to use for that). I
watched a few episodes with them, which I had not seen since I was a
tweenybopper - when I had a HUGE crush on Marlo. My mother happened to be a big
fan of Tiffany's. so I was very familiar with Holly Golightly, but I have never
really associated the two that much. I guess they were both quirky women in
NYC, but Ann Marie seems both more conventional, and more independent minded,
than Holly G. Even so, the patriarchal sexism of "That Girl" was overpowering,
and I think much of what made it funny for the students (in addition to Thomas'
attractive physical and personality characteristics). I was slightly surprised
by how sexist it was, since in my memory Thomas was one of the first feminist
icons, but maybe I have been reading back into "That Girl" stuff that owed more
to the "Free to Be, You and Me" era?--
