Of course, although Groening was inspired by Rusty Nails, Dan Castellaneta's voice characterization is a loving tribute to Bob Bell's unique voice he gave to his version of Bozo the Clown in Chicago on WGN's famous "Bozo's Circus," undoubtedly the longest-running and most popular of all of the local Bozo franchises. Every day when the Larry Harmon Bozo cartoon aired, you could tell that the great differences between Harmon's voice and Bell's voice (but of course, Bell was funnier than any of those lame cartoons). In fact, the daily intro was probably more memorable than the cartoons:
"RINGMASTER" NED LOCKE: And now, I have a question for you, and I bet you have an answer for me. WHO'S YOUR FAVORITE CLOWN? AUDIENCE: BOOOO-ZOOOOO! BOZO: (Maniacal laugh) HEYYY, THAT'S MEEE! (Maniacal laugh as audience applauds, band plays cartoon theme and dissolve to film cued past title sequence--they also never ran the credits sequence, either--since almost every episode ended with Bozo laughing, usually to his own lame joke, they just did a quick dissolve during his laughter to a shot of the audience applauding and the band doing a fanfare into the commercials).
