Thanks for this, Bob. Lela Swift was the best director in daytime
television. Dark Shadows and Ryan's Hope were both shot in a tiny studio
with all kinds of technical deficiencies, but Lela never let it affect her.
She was a warm and funny person, too, and nurtured the young and often
inexperienced actors, including a very young Kate Mulgrew. In the link you
sent, David Selby, the romantic lead of Dark Shadows for much of its run,
left this note. RIP, Lela.
I didn’t know at the time what a pioneer Lela was. All I knew was
she was a loving force with a wonderful smile who took me by the hand and
guided me through my first role on television. I loved her. I never thanked
her enough. Women are still fighting, and can find never-ending inspiration
from dear Lela. David Selby
