I don't really think he will be remembered as being anywhere close to the top ten in play by play announcers of all time though. I first got to know him from his work on CBS, where he was pretty good. But Keith Jackson (they guy Gifford replaced on MNF) was one of the all time great play by play announcers, not Frank. I notice in the announcement they include two interesting phrases, the first to the effect that his death was sudden, and the second asking for privacy. I am not sure what triggered those, but my general sense is that he has been in decline for sometime, perhaps with some kind of dementia? Frank could do one more service to football if he had arranged for his brain to get the close once-over to look for signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. -- -- TV or Not TV ....
