“Stay Human is a five-piece band, made up of JB, Joe Saylor (Tambourine Cowboy) on drums/percussion, Eddie Barbash on saxophone, Phil Kuehn on bass and Ibanda Ruhumbika on tuba… We’ve seen at least one female musician on guitar and vocals, as well as other assorted people that I haven’t been able to identify, playing various other instruments (alternate drummer who also doubles on guitars and keyboards, extra guitarists, and extra horns, etc.).”
And after seeing the closing credits for “Band” at the end of tonight’s show, it appears the “alternate drummer” is Louis Cato, and the bass player that’s been performing since the first LSwSC has been Michael Thurber. As there were seven musicians in the band tonight, and only four names (no band credit for Jon Batiste) listed in the credits, I’m still confused about who the permanent members of the band are. I mentioned in a different thread a week or two ago that it seems likely that the band augments with additional musicians as needed. According to Wikipedia and various online news articles I’ve been able to find, Stay Human is a five-piece band, made up of JB, Joe Saylor (Tambourine Cowboy) on drums/percussion, Eddie Barbash on saxophone, Phil Kuehn on bass and Ibanda Ruhumbika on tuba (they appear to leave the bassist back home when they’re doing one of the impromptu subway/neighborhood gigs that are available on YouTube). But they’ve obviously had nights when the band was made up of more than five people (and a couple with less). We’ve seen at least one female musician on guitar and vocals, as well as other assorted people that I haven’t been able to identify, playing various other instruments (alternate drummer who also doubles on guitars and keyboards, extra guitarists, and extra horns, etc.). It wouldn't surprise me if there were new members, as I don't recall the same people playing trumpet and guitar. But I don't have a lot of visual memory to work from. I believe the band was expanded before taking the Late Show stage, so they could be trying out different personnel and/or instrumentation. I can't be sure, but the May have been some personnel changes in the back of the band setup. Then again, they may just be dressing differently. I can't tell if it's that they changed what they're playing, the mix, or both, although I'm kind of leaning towards it being one of the latter two. -- David J.
