Heaven forfend a studio take advantage of existing production talent...
While I understand that the proposed new program won't be linked to the movies,
with Kurtzman's involvement, I kind of expect this to be in the same timeline
established by the Abrams films.  But that's just a guess on my part.

"Star Trek Continues" and "Star Trek Renegades" are two web-based Trek
fan-fiction with preexisting sets and full production teams standing by. Both
series are deeply rooted with crew from the Paramount Trek shows. If the CBSAA
Trek series is based in the so-called TOS era, they could conceivably have
immediate access to sets, wardrobe, makeup, VFX, music, etc. if they aligned
with the "Continues" team (they have a fully authentic recreation of the
original Enterprise bridge, transporter room, crew quarters, hallways, and most
recently the engine room). The Renegades production is decidedly less
expansive, but it could also theoretically be used as a basis for something
new, thus minimizing a lot of preproduction time. Ordinarily, it would be quite
a stretch to consider an actual studio joining forces with fan-produced
content, but CBS/Paramount has been very helpful with Trek fan fiction over the
years, and it is less of a stretch to consider them working with such groups on
web-based content.

Tying this exclusively to CBS All Access (without allowing for some form of
CableCo login, like the other broadcast networks) means this show is doomed to
fail domestically, since the only viewers will be finding the show via
extra-legal means.
Nothing on CBSAA is worth paying for.

I've never cared for having either of the Transformers twins attached to Trek,

how dates for the Abrams-era films frequently slipped.
I mean, it seems to be a stretch that a legacy show can be developed, cast,
shot, and ready for air in 14 months time.  At least not without corners being
cut - and that's supposed to be a new-Battlestar Galactica thing.

Tying this exclusively to the CBS All Access service also smacks of desperation
from the Eye, but YMMV.

It'll premiere in Jan 2017 on CBS, whose namesake Studios own the rights, but
straightaway move to the net's All Access service... Alex Kurtzman and Heather
Kadin (Limitless, Scorpion) are execs... their associate Roberto Orci is hard
at work with Abrams and company on Paramount's feature ST Beyond, to which the
series will not be related...
