Sadly, I think the reason they did it is part of a vain attempt to make it
easier for new subscribers to understand how Twitter works.

New user: "What does Favorite mean?"

You: "Well, it could mean "Save for later," or it might mean, "Good point,"
or it could mean, "I think I'm going to end this conversation now," etc.

New user: "I think I'll go back to Snapchat..."

Basically growth in Twitter has stalled, and Wall St wants Facebook-sized
increases. So Twitter tries to make itself "friendlier" to outsiders. But
anyone who's on Twitter knows that it does take a certain amount of work.
You have to put time in following the right people and understanding how @.
# and DMs all work.

The danger is that Twitter makes changes that leave its current users
disenchanted, but don't actually get new users onboard.
