I'd guess that shot backstage is taken right before they come out rather than 
before the first commercial.  But I'd been fooled and should have known better.

You know that live shot from backstage when Colbert throws to the first 
commercial and we see the featured guest in the wings? Last night, they 
(accidentally?) proved that it's just as false as most of the on-air 
conversations. That, or the ice cream guy is able to be in two places at once.
