I have this working theory on what would make debates better for the voters: Make experts serve as moderators. If the debate is centered around the economy and taxes, questions should be asked by economists and tax experts. Let military leaders past and present ask questions about military strategy. Let world leaders ask questions about foreign policy. Let scientists and doctors ask questions about science and health. Any idiot can look at a stopwatch... they could even add a buzzer or even a microphone kill switch if candidates exceed time. But neither Anderson Cooper nor Chris Wallace can ask informed follow-up questions on major subjects or contradict lies told by candidates. Experts can.
