I don't know what the exact time frame is, especially since how often they're on the air enters into it, but all commentators have a limited shelf life. When we first come across them, the good ones are telling us things we haven't heard before, and are usually close enough to having played to provide some insight about what players are thinking. As time passes, they're providing us with the same information, even when it becomes a little less relevant. McCarver was fine when he started, but the networks kept him in front of us for (much) too long. Early in Phil Simms' career, he was actually insightful; now he's just overexposed. And, to be complete, there's a different dynamic on local broadcasts. We hear those guys enough to develop a familiar "relationship" that's different than what we have with national announcers. -- -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
