I was away from home for the first half and I had the second half on mostly
in the background. Hairspray was a tremendous improvement over Peter Pan as
Pan was joyless and bland. Having crowd noise made Hairspray feel more
alive and closer to theater. The ad breaks for the earlier NBC musicals
were long and would start with the same commercial. Hairspray did some
interstitials to transition from the play to the commercial breaks which
did not seem as long as in the past. I was not pleased to see in-program
advertising by cast members but that is the way of the world now. I
understand why they did the bits where they took cameras to large viewing
parties and gave a platform to die hard fans of the play. Since I am not
one of them it left me cold. All in all though, I think it was a step
forward for NBC and its presentation of live musicals.
