There is a Facebook page dedicated to vintage LA icons. It is run be an
iron-fisted woman who must be agreed with under all circumstances, but if
you can overlook her, the posts there offer up cool nostalgia for anybody
born and raised in Southern California. This sign was mentioned recently,
and it reminded me how little attention I paid to the Sunset Strip at the
age when most others cared about it. I knew the owner of one of the hottest
clubs on the strip (a former child star who invested wisely) who offered me
VIP access whenever I wanted, and I never took him up on it. I did go to
the Irish bar on the Strip a few times with my friends, but we always left
when it transformed from a bar to a club. Tower Records never appealed to
me; the personnel were way too full of themselves for me to want to buy
anything from them. In my TV days, I briefly had a corner office at the end
of the Strip (the City National building), but I was never wild about the
view. In hindsight, I guess I missed out on that edgy rock scene, and it is
too late now to try to capture it (people who do go clubbing have seen THAT
middle-aged guy in the club... I just can't bring myself to become that sad
caricature). To those who went to the Whiskey, the sign is a symbol of
those days. The cruising, the music, the drugs, the sex.

I think I just depressed myself.
