I was there two weeks ago and misread the ticket. It said "check in by 4," and I took it to read "check in at 4." I got there about 3:40, and had no trouble getting in, though I was in the balcony. This was actually fine, though, since (in all my times in the Ed) it was the first time I'd been able to see the whole show - and the refurbishment and the dome are pretty spectacular.
I still don't understand the logic of loading everyone into the lobby to wait for close to an hour before entering the theatre, then having canned music and an overly-long warmup by the comedian (doing basically the same shtick over and over) kill the mood. The band gets things moving again, as does Colbert's Q&A, but they have to climb a hill they themselves created. They've worked out most of the bugs of the taping process, though, and once they start, it moves quickly, and we were on the street by 6:45. Oh, and don't even -think- of having your phone out or taking set photos. They -will- yell at you for trying either. As always, I advise watching the show in the theatre and not the one on-screen.
