I read all this group via Gmail, and I've never had a problem with any
messages being considered spam.

I confess, I've never even seen a "dismiss" button on an ad. To be fair to
Twitter, these ads are the only thing that prevent them losing even more
money, so I don't begrudge them trying to make a buck or two. For what it's
worth, on a desktop or laptop, I use Tweetdeck (owned by Twitter) to view
it. It takes some time to get used to, but you can do some very smart
things organising some of the people you follow into separate Lists and
seeing them separately. You can do all this on main Twitter, but it's not
nearly as neat.

I think the biggest issue in all of social media is the actually paid
messaging by people (often celebrities) that isn't identified as such. I
know the FCC was talking about this recently in the US, and the UK
regulator Ofcom has also slapped wrists over this. But the nature of the
medium means that it's incredibly hard to control, and that means that it
can be a real wild west in terms of what companies get up to. I think
Instagram is worse than Twitter for this.
