That "research" has a very broad definition. I've watched many, many shows 
at the library, and while one needs to express a specific reason for 
watching a video (in my case, it's always been research for upcoming 
productions -- most of them legitimately), I've seen people of all ages 
sitting at the monitors, including people whose researching seemed spurious 
at best. (Side note: the staff is extremely friendly and accommodating, and 
anyone with an NYPL card -- which can be obtained downstairs) is eligible 
to watch the recordings. Behave appropriately and you'll be fine.
