Maria Bamford has released her latest stand-up comedy special, “Old Baby,” on Netflix. I realize Bamford is not everyone’s cup of coffee. I had an exchange on the alt.fan.letterman Facebook group with another member of this mailing list about it. He felt her humor on Colbert’s “Late Show” wasn’t honest. I thought it was pharmaceutical grade honesty. And I think her latest Netflix special is honest and is also genius.
The concept is that she starts by performing alone, then slowly builds the audience size, performing for one person, then a few on the street, then more in her home, on to a bowling alley, gradually building to a full auditorium. It works well. A motif is a statue (paper mache?) of a dog that sits and watches each performance. She has standard stand-up jokes mixed with observations about tragic family history for both her and her husband. She jokes about some very dark matters but convinces she’s doing okay and suggest maybe we can be okay with things like that as well. -- -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
