The longtime sportswriter and athlete biographer was a fixture on HBO's "RealSports with Bryant Gumbel" and wrote a best-selling fictional novel, "Everybody's All-American" in 1981. One of his handful of acting jobs was a cameo in the 1988 film version of his novel.
