Oh Kevin..... I had a Beta HiFi that I bought in 1985(?) for $999.95 (omg!). I brought it to university (aka "college") (1986 to 1990) and regularly taped shows such as LA Law which I would watch after I finished my homework. [what freaking idiot spends $1k on electronics in the days where minimum wage was less than $4/hr? -- me]
I also learned how to "clean" a VCR with water damage after my GF/wife used the Sanyo Beta HiFi (official equipment of 1984 LA Olypmics) as a plant stand. Yes, a plant stand.... where the plant was over-watered and circuit boards were damaged. The trick is 99% alcohol, Q-Tips, and air-dry. similar photo attached... including Olympic sticker. My unit was chrome/silver rather than grey.
