Of note is the fact that this year ASO (the organisers) and France Televisions (the host broadcaster) have chosen to televise every minute of every stage live. While fans of other sports might be surprised that this doesn't happen already, the complexities of covering a constantly moving event over 200km with motorbikes, helicopters, planes circling and satellites mean that this has rarely been done before - at least not for every stage of the race.
What this means is that commentators who might have done 2-3 hours shifts are now needed for perhaps 5-6 hour stints. I'm guessing that there's no way Paul and Phil - the NBC commentators - are doing that. In the past Paul and Phil did the world feed in English with all sorts of local opt outs for major markets including the US, the UK and Australia (they were also heard in South Africa). But ITV in the UK now uses its own team, and they've augmented it a bit so that people shift around for the longer stages. The same has happened with Eurosport (which has had a cash injection to up its coverage following Discovery's takeover), which means we're lucky enough in the UK to have two alternative feeds - one free to air, and one subscription - both of which are fully produced with their own commentators, presenters and reporters at each stage. Both broadcasters have apps and because the stages are in full, they're simulcasts. My suggestion would be to, er, find a way to watch a UK broadcast. Personally I prefer Ned Boulting and David Miller on ITV4. With a - cough - VPN - you should be able to get it. And if it's a mobile, search for something called Mobdro (not in the Play store). Or check out http://www.steephill.tv/ A real shame that you're getting such a crappy service when you're happy to pay for the full thing.
