Jason Zinoman of the NYT rewatched the more than 30 interviews Dave did
with Trump over 30 years in late night TV and reported his observations
yesterday - it is not good for Dave. (Apologies if this has already been
posted here and I missed it). Zinoman is explicit that the rise of Trump
and Trumpism can not be blamed on late night TV hosts (not Dave, not
Fallon). Still, his point that in the same interview in which Dave famously
confronted Trump with his hypocrisy about manufacturing products overseas,
he apologized to Trump for calling him racist for his birtherism, is
sobering.

I love Dave of course, but he was and is not perfect. Trump (along with Dr.
Phil and Richard Simmons) were one of the few regular guests that would
cause me to regularly skip the show. I doubt I saw more than 5 of those
Trump interviews over the years - most of the ones I did see were the
later, more serious ones. Dave has given some indication that part of what
he hopes to be able to do with his new show is make this kind of thing
right, and I hope he does.
