I would never call myself a Michael Vick fan. I was horrified when my hometown Philadelphia Eagles hired him.
Having said that... I think Vick did a pretty good job of rehabilitating himself during his time in Philadelphia - working with the Humane Society to put an end to dogfighting (read http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/dogfighting/qa/vick_faq.html for an excellent description of his work and why the Society, after initially rejecting him, came to appreciate him so much), and emerging as a leader within the team. And when wide receiver Riley Cooper was caught on video making a racial slur, causing an uproar both inside and outside the team, it was Vick who reached out to him and served as the peacemaker between the black and white team members, allowing Cooper to be brought back into the fold. After Vick left the Eagles to play for the Jets, all the protests and complaints that had happened in Philadelphia happened all over again in New York. Considering all he had done since his prison release, I was actually shocked that this was all coming up again. Then the protests happened again when he went to Pittsburgh to play for the Steelers. Now they're happening again with Fox Sports. Again, not his biggest fan. I hate him for what he did, and I don't wish to diminish it. But I do admire him for what he's done since his release. And if serving prison time, being accepted by the Humane Society as a spokesman on behalf of animal rights, and leading what by all accounts has been a fairly exemplary life since then isn't enough for him to move on with his life in the public sphere, I wonder what would be.
