I still don't know if a scheduled recording will still complete when the
power is off on the cable box, but we have determined that the perishable
food in our fridge had to be thrown out, while the food in the freezer
could be saved.

Calistoga, the resort community about 20 minutes to our north known for its
mineral waters, was evacuated yesterday (it is chilling to see photos of
its streets empty). The city of Napa, about 40 minutes to our south, was
put on evacuation advisory, which means they have to be ready to walk out
the door with 5-15 minutes notice at any time. I drive back and forth to
work each day in between two of the largest fires; the road is safe and
pretty clear (no tourists, parents taking kids to and from school, or most
local workers) but eerie.

I was able to see a little bit of national news, and saw there was coverage
of our fire. It is wierd to see it reflected like that. Local news is more
helpful (though local news here means San Francisco, Oakland or Sacramento
based, which means they still dont really know much about us, and a lot of
their stories begin and end with a hook like: "Here is where all that smoke
is coming from" or "Let's see how our favorite wineries are doing". I have
been spending most of my time monitoring twitter, FB and web sites from
various local and state agencies, and then going back and fact checking a
legion of rumors (posting to a local FB group something like: "Can anyone
confirm reports the fire has jumped HWY 29 and is raging down Bale Lane?
(Nobody could, as this rumor, which would mean the town where I live was
suddenly in mortal danger, was not true).

I am not sure if I wrote this here before or not (a little loopy now) - but
after the second day I was thinking something like "Now I know how they
feel in Puerto Rico" - then I kicked myself in the ass and realized I have
no effing idea how they feel in PR, since I was only without power for 40
hours, and they have been without for weeks, and likely will for months,
and in the middle of the crisis of thier lives are being ridiculed and
scapegoated by their president. I live in one of the wealthiest areas in
one of the wealthiest states (though lots of poor and vanilla middle class
types here too), and even if POTUS is ignoring us, we can be pretty sure
important and powerful people are watching and will help us rebuild. I
don't know at all what it feels like to be in Puerto Rico, but I am even
more convinced that the top domestic priority of this country for the next
few months should be getting those folks back on their feet.
