Couple Thinkers is the six part YouTube show starring Craig and Megan Ferguson. Each episode runs about 25 minutes. The series is sponsored/produced by GANT, a fashion company.
Each episode starts at the Fergusons' home in the hills. Craig and Megan start to talk about a subject and they decide to talk to an expert. IN the first three episodes they met the expert at a workplace and in the second three they met at the expert's home. They ask the expert questions and that conversation is intercut with the Fergusons talking to the camera on the couch or talking with each other. They wrap it up at the end with no sense of resolution. I was underwhelmed by the show. It started to feel like the show hit its stride by the fifth episode. My expectations were set by seeing Craig's talk show and reading his books. I think his intentions for the show were noble, asking a deep question and spending some time talking to someone who knows about it. The problem is that Craig's charm and wit don't come through as he is going out of his way to be serious. And what he and Megan get from the experts sounds like TED Talks. Megan Ferguson does not have a personality for the camera and sparks don't fly between her and Craig. I assume they have a healthy relationship off camera but it does not work on camera like Craig could have with some recurring guests on his show, notably Kristen Bell. My other problem with the show is that it has a whiff of wealth about it, which is probably an intentional design decision by GANT. The Fergusons wear GANT fashions (fine, they're putting up the money) and the places they go for conversations are fancy, more so in the later episodes. To find an opposite example, Jerry Seinfeld in his Comedians in Cars series may drive exclusive classic cars, but he and his guests go to regular coffee shops and delis to have their conversations. It make the conversations feel more inclusive and it's missing in Couple Thinkers. I can't either recommend the series or tell you not to watch it. It's smart people having smart conversations. That in itself is not a waste of time. But the conversations cannot get too deep because of time constraints and Craig doesn't have the wit or sparkle he had on good nights on the Late Late Show. -- -- TV or Not TV ....
