On a side issue - if you think US elections run late, you want to try a UK one! While we only have one timezone, polls close at 10pm. After this we'll get a national exit poll which may give an idea of who's won, but in recent years, will only really be an indicator. Everyone needs to wait for the individual counts. Oh, and we don't use machines to vote either, so it's hand counting paper ballots. We don't actually find out what's going to happen until 2am, 3am or 4am. Last time around we had a hung parliament (no clear overall winner) and the main anchors stayed on air until about 9am the following morning, before a new shift came on. Now that's a long night! Notwithstanding a few exceptions on both sides of the pond, the results of either a UK parliamentary election or a US presidential election can be confirmed at roughly the same hour local UK time! Getting back to Colbert. Surely if he's going live later on, the staff all starts production a few hours later than usual? That should mean that everybody stays fresh.
