Additional comments, including program descriptions: THE NEIGHBORHOOD (Mon. 8)--An indirect response to Kimmel's wisecrack yesterday about never seeing brown on CBS except Murphy Brown, a whitebread family from the Midwest moves into an LA hood and hilarity ensues. Max Greenfield and Dreama Walker are the honkies, Cedric the Entertainer and Tichina Arnold aren't. In-house and with Jim Burrows directing the pilot, a multi-cam (as I believe every new CBS sitcom is).
HAPPY TOGETHER (Mon. 8:30)--Supposedly inspired by an instance where Ben Winston, James Corden's showrunner, was living with One Direction's Harry Styles (both of whom are EPs), Damon Wayans, Jr. is the Gen-Xer who lets in the millennial pop star (Felix Mallard) into his home and all of the millennial jokes that Joel McHale's CBS sitcom never got to will be used. In-house and multi-cam. MAGNUM PI (Mon. 9)--Cue the Mike Post theme: Jay Hernandez is the new version of the Hawaiian private eye, but Higgins is now a woman. Donald Bellisario is only picking up creator residuals here (co-creator Glen Larson is deceased). In-house with series owner Universal. FBI (Tues. 9)--Dick Wolf leaves Chicago to follow the New York G-persons (which makes this series unconnected with the Efrem Zimbalist-Quinn Martin series and the unsuccessful 1981 series "Today's FBI"), Jeremy Sisto and Connie Nielsen's the names that jump out in the cast. In-house with Universal, Wolf's home now and forever. MURPHY BROWN (Thurs. 9:30)--Candice Bergen's back as the demanding journalist, how hosting a morning show (oh, good, lots of Steve Doocy jokes!), with most of the original cast back and creator Diane English (who hasn't really done much since the show went off the air) showrunning. Owned by Warner Bros. (along with the other CBS Thursday night sitcoms, a rarity in today's network television landscape). Of course it's multi-cam. GOD FRIENDED ME (Sun. 8)--I would've clicked on "Delete," but a confirmed atheist didn't, so his life has changed. Greg Berlanti takes a little time off from the DC/Archie Comics TV Universe at the C-Dub for this series, from Warners (did WB tell Les that he couldn't have another season of "Big Bang" if he didn't pick this up?). FAM (mid-season)--Nina Dobrev from "Vampire Diaries" is going out with Tone Bell (that's right, folks, an interracial romance on CBS!), when her wacko sister shows up to ruin things. Brian Stokes Mitchell and Sheryl Lee Ralph play Bell's parents. In-house multi-cam. THE CODE (mid-season)--It's not just a courtroom drama, it's a Marine courtroom drama. Original Schuyler Sister from "Hamilton" Phillipa Soo's in the cast, but she won't be singing (likely). In-house. THE RED LINE (mid-season)--This isn't Dick Wolf's Chicago PD, not when a white cop shoots a black doctor and three families are directly involved. It's based on a play by former Chicagoan Caitlin Parrish called "A Twist of Water," which Parrish and her longtime partner (mostly as director) Erica Weiss adapted for television, they're for now the showrunners. To be filmed on location in Chicago with Noah Wyle and some very good Chicago actors (if you watch the series, you will get to witness the incredible Elizabeth Laidlaw). Ava DuVerney directed the pilot and Berlanti's a producer. From Warners.
