"Today" started in January 1952. Steve Allen's local New York talk show premiered in 1953 and was "The Steve Allen Show" until it went network-wide in September 1954 under the title "Tonight! Starring Steve Allen."
As Kevin said in another response to this thread, there was an interim when it was "Tonight! America After Dark." Then when Jack Paar came in, it was "Tonight Starring Jack Paar," which eventually became "The Jack Paar Tonight Show."
