I was always under the impression that it was "Tonight" (or, alternatively, 
The "Tonight" Show) in the same way that's "Today"/The "Today" Show.  

The "Today" logic is furthered by the traditional 'break for commercial' 
copy - "But first...this is 'Today' on NBC."
