Oh I know Ari Fleischer (nowhere near as horrible as Sanders). But neither he nor Bush called for Maher to be fired. Which is where the line is that should not be crossed. But, as I read the article that had the headline “White House Demands Sam B be fired“ posted by Steve (which I should have read before I posted about it) I see Sanders did not quite cross the line either (though she got closer than Fleischer did). She said Turner should show comments like Bee’s would not be condoned”. There are lots of ways of doing that without firing her.
When ABC cancelled Maher because of public pressure generated by Bush (which they obviously did, even though they denied it) that is weak and cowardly on their part, but not an outrage on Bush’s part, unless he threatened to directly punish ABC somehow (which I dont believe he did, as it was unnecessary at that time). If Turner fires Bee now it will be their own weak-ass fault, which is different than if the President formally demanded it. There are some interesting side notes to all of this - is it less offensive for a female comic to use that term to slam a female official than if a male had one it? (yes, obviously, though that does not make it okay even so). Is it worse that the target was the President’s daughter? (Yes). Is it okay because she is a Presidential Advisor (less bad than if she were a 16 year old girl, but still bad enough). Is that particular word so offensive that there is no excuse for ever using it in any context? (I don’t think so, but my opinion is probably not one of those that counts the most on this one). But regardless of those, never lose sight of the fundamental fact that however bad the Bee comment was, it was not even in the same neighborhood as Barr’s comment - not even close.
