I only worked on one show with Aretha. How I happened upon her contract, I
cannot say, but it was amazing. In addition to the usual dressing room
clauses and dietary needs, she demanded payment up front, in cash, in a
briefcase delivered to her hands and nobody else’s, before she would set
foot on the stage. She was a woman in total control of her life and her
career.

Anyone want to guess how much she was paid to sing one song on an award
show in the late 1990s?
