There are two large reasons why you don't get to see vintage late night
episodes on TV: Network executives and late night TV producers.

Their reasoning is simple and selfish: They don't want viewers thinking the
"best of" late night happened long ago; they want to insist the "best of"
is whatever they are producing or broadcasting right now, because if their
best days are behind them... they are going to be out of a job.

Remember as the "Later with..." transition was occurring, NBC decided to
run old episodes of SCTV in the timeslot? Ratings were basically on par
with new episodes of their late night fare. So although there is evidence
the old stuff works, a TV network exists to provide new and original
content to audiences (nobody wins awards or accolades for showing reruns).
