Problem is most of what caught fire the last two big go-‘rounds was not
really what one would typically describe as forest, it was wooded areas
nestled among residential areas of the state, which is why the damage was
so extreme. The big electric company in California is poised to sell off
chunks of the business because it turns out their infrastructure directly
contributed to the fires, and they are about to get hit with lawsuits.

California went through a major drought, followed by record rainfall. That
led to stuff growing where stuff hadn’t grown in a long time. That provided
abnormally large fuel for the subsequent fires. Short of closing the state,
there was no way to avoid catastrophe. Now they have the flash flooding, as
soil held together by lush brush and roots is now just sliding freely under
the weight of any amount of rain. It is a Russian nesting doll of
devastation.
