I still find this really odd. Why would a broadcaster that has been carrying a tournament bailout right towards the finals? Was there some massive clash that Turner couldn't avoid? Surely the games take place during US daytime anyway, so are unlikely to have major clashes with re-scheduled other US sports?
And I also find it really strange that the contract should have been written in such a way as to allow a broadcaster to break it at such a point. I understand break clauses - but this seems odd. I guess global pandemics weren't included, and that forced a way for Turner to get out. I can only really think that they massively overpaid, weren't getting returns, and used the pandemic as a way to wriggle out of a final payment. Future sports contracts with broadcasters will surely have more tight language to bind the broadcasters more tightly.
