When Turner got the Champion and Euro leagues, they made the depressing decision to put almost all of it on their BR Live OTT service. And I'm reasonably confident that it not only didn't work out, but it didn't work out to a level that they were willing to walk away rather than lose more cash. And I'm sure Uefa, given the opportunity to put their product on a wider platform, were more than happy to let Turner walk.
There's a legendary story about (IIRC) the 1997 World Series. NBC had the rights to it. But the ratings hadn't hit the guarantees, despite it going seven games. And whoever was in charge of NBC Sports then said something along the lines of "If HGTV called me to offer to take Game 7, I'd take that call."
