66 players opted out by deadline today, no superstars, some key players. That’s about 2 players per team average.
They could play an entire season, they have private jets and could probably take over entire hotels when they travel. But they are not putting players in bubbles in between flights, hotels, home and stadium, so they are really just rolling the dice. Really, as with sending kids to school, it comes down to how much virus is in the general population. If there are spikes in CA or TX or FL or NY any time during the Fall or Winter, it is impossible to believe the virus will not hit significant fractions of several teams. If three teams have COVID outbreaks on Thursday of week 4, that costs 6 teams probably two games (presuming a 14 day quarantine following, and no savings from bye weeks). How do they make that up? And the want live fans in the stands (I suppose they will ban tail gating), meaning they are as likely to cause as be the victims of a local spike. The NFL has consistently done almost everything possible to make it hard to continue to be a fan of their game.
