So, maybe we are saying the same thing here, or something similar. When a Toyota salesman sells a lot of RAV4s, it does not necessarily mean he is a good salesman, since it is the most popular SVU in America. A lot of Americans want that vehicle, and will buy it regardless of how good or bad the salesman is.
Trump is selling White Nationalism. A lot of Americans (close to half, we will see in 2 months if close enough to win the electoral college again) want White Nationalism. They are not being persuaded to buy it because Trump is a super salesman who can make something ugly and toxic look shiny and desirable (which is what I think Gaffigan is saying).
