This is an unrelated celebrity tabloid journalism story but it does give an
idea of how the tabloids get these stories.

A friend of mine owns a used bookstore, mostly English language books, in
Tel Aviv. A couple of days ago he posted on FB that a young woman with a
toddler came into his store to browse and bought some books. When he looked
at her credit card it turned out to be Amber Heard. He took a picture of
her with a bookstore tote bag.

The next day an Israeli gossip columnist translated his post into Hebrew
and published it and the picture without attribution. Later that day my
friend posted this link:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11088381/Amber-Heard-spotted-Israel-controversial-journalist-banned-Johnny-Depp-trial.html

For those who understandably don’t want to read a Daily Mail article, it’s
about Amber’s trip to Tel Aviv, including a word-for-word copy of the FB
post and photo, again without any attribution or credit. My friend asked
about legal action in the comments of the post with the Daily Mail link and
someone I don’t know (an attorney apparently) said getting even the best
result wouldn’t be worth the money and hassle.

The relationship of this to the Anne Heche story is that TMZ doesn’t need
an army of paparazzi or need to send people out to stalk celebrities
anymore. They just need to know from a police scanner or social media that
something happened to a celebrity and then they can scan Twitter,
Instagram, TikTok, etc for footage they can use.
