In the US around 3 million school children saw it live (2.5 million on a special satellite feed from NASA into classrooms). I have been trying to find credible studies of the short and long term mental health consequences, if any, on children exposed to that trauma. So far I have only located a single study, by psychiatrist Lenore Terr, whose work I am very familiar with, and do not judge to be credible. However, even in her study (I would say she tends to dramatically exaggerate trauma symptoms), it seems like she found some mild to moderate trauma symptoms in the short term (3-6 months), and much fewer in the longer term.
I suspect most parents would like to be able to make their own decisions about what their children should be exposed to, but: A) I think it is unlikely either News of the Queen’s death, or coverage of her funeral, is likely to cause much negative psychological consequence in children and B) if you have reason to believe it might for your children, maybe don’t let them watch the news or social media right now. Of course I am culturally dissociated from what the impact of QE2’s death would be in British children, but I have trouble believing it would be much more impactful than the death of a loving grandmother, and I don’t think we generally advise parents to keep children away from their grandparent’s funerals.
